1. Five Things to Look For Manually

Before reaching for any tool, you can catch a lot of fake reviews yourself. These are the patterns I've seen most often after spending hundreds of hours reading Amazon reviews and building detection models.

🔤 Overly positive, generic language

Fake reviews tend to be aggressively positive but strangely vague. They praise the product without mentioning specific features, use-cases, or anything that suggests the person actually used it. Phrases like "exceeded my expectations," "absolutely love it," and "best purchase ever" — repeated across dozens of reviews with no substance behind them — are classic tells.

The biggest red flag? Reviews that sound copy-pasted. When you see the same phrases repeated almost verbatim across multiple reviews for the same product, that's coordinated, not coincidental.

👤 Suspicious reviewer profiles

This is the single most reliable manual check you can do. Click on the reviewer's name and look at their history. A real person reviews things they actually bought — maybe headphones, a kitchen gadget, and a book. Their ratings vary. They leave some 3-star reviews. Some are short, some are detailed.

A fake reviewer? Their profile looks like a catalog of random, unrelated products — a phone case, a supplement, a garden hose, a laptop stand — all rated five stars, all with similarly enthusiastic language. Real people don't love everything they buy.

🤖 AI-generated text patterns

LLM-generated reviews have specific tells. The classic giveaways — em-dashes everywhere, the "It's not just X, it's Y" construction, and overly structured paragraphs — are becoming less common as people get better at prompting, but they haven't disappeared. Reviews that read like a college essay rather than someone sharing their honest experience are worth questioning.

📊 Unnatural rating distributions

Legitimate products almost always have a natural spread of ratings. Even great products get some 1-star reviews from people who had shipping issues or misread the description. A product with 500 reviews, 480 of which are five stars and almost nothing in the middle? That distribution is statistically improbable without intervention.

Compare the rating distribution against similar products in the same category. If competitors show a typical bell curve and one product is all fives, that contrast tells a story.

2. Why Detection Is Getting Harder

If you're reading this in 2026, detecting fake reviews is significantly harder than it was even two years ago. The reason is straightforward: large language models have gotten really good.

In 2023, AI-generated reviews were almost comically easy to spot. They all sounded the same — polished, structured, and dripping with em-dashes. The phrasing was formulaic. You could read three reviews and immediately sense they came from the same source.

That's no longer the case. People are using better prompts, fine-tuning their own models, and some are running local LLMs specifically to avoid detection. The same technology students use to generate essays is being applied to product reviews at scale. The results read more naturally, vary more in tone, and are much harder to flag automatically.

Beyond AI text, the tactics themselves have evolved. The old playbook — bulk-posting 100 generic five-star reviews in a day — still happens, but sophisticated sellers now drip reviews over weeks, mix in some four-star ratings for plausibility, and use accounts with established purchase histories. Some pay real people to write reviews in their own words, which blurs the line between "fake" and "incentivized but genuine."

3. An Honest Take on the Industry

I get asked a lot: "Why does Amazon let this happen?" The honest answer is that they don't want it to happen — fake reviews damage their brand and erode the trust that drives their entire business. But at Amazon's scale, the problem is genuinely hard to solve.

Think about the tradeoffs. Amazon could aggressively filter reviews using a more sensitive detection model, but that would inevitably produce false positives — real reviews from real customers getting flagged and removed. Every false positive is a frustrated customer and a potentially harmed seller. For a platform generating the revenue Amazon does, even a small percentage of false positives is a massive number of people affected.

So what likely happens is that Amazon optimizes for high precision (when they flag a review, they're very confident it's fake) but sacrifices recall (they miss a lot of fakes to avoid incorrectly punishing legitimate reviews). It's a rational engineering decision. It just means the gap is filled by services like ours.

Could Amazon solve this completely if they committed to it? Probably. A deep learning model with access to the full universe of reviewer behavior data — purchase history, browsing patterns, account activity, IP data — could likely catch the vast majority of manipulation. Amazon has that data. The question is whether the ROI justifies the investment and the collateral damage from false positives. Right now, the answer seems to be "not yet."

In the meantime, consumers are on their own. Tools like ours exist because there's a gap between what Amazon catches and what actually exists. We're not replacing Amazon's systems — we're supplementing them.

4. When Tools Help — and When They Don't

  • Read the actual reviews. Sort by most recent and read verified purchase reviews. Look for specific, detailed experiences. A well-written 3-star review often tells you more than fifty 5-star ones.
  • Check what the low scores say. The 1- and 2-star reviews are where real problems surface. If multiple people mention the same quality issue or defect, believe them.
  • Cross-reference outside Amazon. Search the product name on YouTube, Reddit, or specialty review sites. Independent reviews from people who bought with their own money are the gold standard.

When to ignore a low score

Niche products with very few reviews are inherently harder to score accurately. If a product has 8 reviews and gets a Grade C, that doesn't necessarily mean the reviews are fake — there just isn't enough data for a confident assessment. In those cases, reading the individual reviews manually is more useful than trusting an automated score.

Similarly, products in unusual categories (handmade items, specialty tools, professional equipment) can have review patterns that look "off" to an algorithm trained on consumer electronics and household goods. Context matters.

The bottom line

Review analysis tools are useful as a guiding signal, but they should never be the only reason you buy or skip a product. Do your own research. Read the reviews yourself. Use tools to flag patterns you might miss, then make an informed decision based on everything together.
